How many times have you seen a woman with what you can only assume to be “natural makeup” applied so wretchedly that her makeup looks anything but natural? You may have selected the right colors (or maybe not) but if the makeup isn’t applied right, your natural makeup will just look plain awful.

Looking natural is an all full makeup routine, taking blush, eye shadow, eye liner, powder, foundation, mascara, and a number of other makeup tools into account, just to achieve that “naturally” flawless and carefree look. Though it may seem a bit overwhelming now to see how much effort is put into looking “natural”, once you get into a routine you’ll be able to have yourself looking naturally beautiful in less than 5 minutes!

Pick a Color that’s right for You

The first and most important rule to natural makeup: choose colors that work for your skin tone, and not colors that you “wish” you could look natural in! Fair skin looks great in pastel shades and they blend in easily, making them a great choice for beginners. Coral lipstick shades, pinks, and berry colors tend to also work best with pale skin.

Olive or medium skin should stay away from pastels and stick with darker colors, like green shades, blues, and purples (yes, these colors can look natural!) or go for darker browns with a gold or silver metallic sheen. As for lipstick, choose a color that is close to your natural lip color.

For those with darker skin, the lips can be left completely nude – or at least covered with a nude colored lipstick. Eyes will look great in purples, greens and browns.

Choose a Yellow Toned Concealer

The reason why you will want a yellow toned concealer is because any concealer with a yellow undertone will hide imperfections far better than any other color based concealer. Given that concealer is meant to “conceal” and cover up our imperfections, always opt for a yellow based concealer that is within a shade or two of your natural skin tone.

Your Foundation should Match your Skin

That’s right, ladies. Foundation is not meant to be put on your skin so that you can “fake” a tan; foundation should always, at all times, be within one shade of your natural skin tone. You will know when you have found the right foundation when it seems to simply disappear once applied to your skin.

You Can’t go Wrong with Brown Shades

Any brown shade for any makeup product – eye shadow, eyeliner, eye brow pencil, lips, cheeks (such as bronzer) – will always end up looking more natural than anything else you can apply. If you have lighter colored eye lashes and want a softer look, go for brown mascara!

Your Blush should Match your Blush

If you embarrass often, check out your face in the mirror. Or, after a good work out, check out your cheeks and see what color you flush to. This is the color you should try to replicate when buying or looking for blush shades at the beauty counter.
